Overpronation and Running Shoes: Do You Need Insoles?
The flat liner that comes in the box is the layer your arch actually rests on.
You went to a running store, someone watched you jog on a treadmill for thirty seconds, and you walked out with a pair of stability shoes. That was supposed to be the end of it. Then a few hundred miles later your arch aches on the drive home, or the inside of one shin starts talking to you on longer runs, and you find yourself wondering whether the shoe is actually doing anything.
It is a reasonable question. Stability shoes are marketed as the answer to overpronation, so if you already own a pair, adding an insole can feel like buying the same solution twice.
It is not the same solution twice. A running shoe and an orthotic insole act at different levels of the same system, and only one of them comes with you when you take the running shoes off. That distinction turns out to explain most of the confusion around this question.

A stability shoe controls the platform under your foot; an insole works at the surface your arch actually rests on, and only one of those two can move between shoes. You overpronate on every step you take, not only the ones you run, so a shoe that manages it for a few hours a week leaves most of your week uncovered. Strip away the marketing language and a stability shoe is a set of structural decisions made in the midsole and the heel. Most of them are invisible once the shoe is on your foot.
A firmer zone on the inside of the midsole
Traditional stability shoes use a medial post, a wedge of denser foam under the arch side of the shoe. Newer designs often skip the post and use a wider midsole flare or sidewalls that cradle the foot instead. Either way, the goal is the same: make the inside of the shoe resist compressing faster than the outside, so the shoe does not tip inward under you.
A stiffer heel counter
The plastic cup moulded into the back of the shoe holds the heel bone more upright at the moment your foot lands. Squeeze the heel of a stability shoe and compare it to a soft neutral trainer, and you will feel the difference immediately.
Resistance to twisting
Hold a shoe at both ends and try to wring it like a towel. A stability shoe resists that motion. This matters because the collapse people call overpronation is partly a twist through the midfoot, not just a sideways lean. If you are unsure whether that describes you, the wear pattern on your current shoes is a surprisingly honest witness, and what your shoe wear says about pronation is worth a look before you buy anything.
All three features work on the platform your foot stands on. None of them touch your arch.
Why the shoe category was never the answer
The running industry spent two decades sorting runners into neutral, stability, and motion control categories based on how their feet roll, then discovered the system did not do what it promised.
The most quoted study on this followed 927 novice runners for a year, all of them in the same neutral shoe, and tracked injuries against foot posture. Runners with pronated feet did not get injured more often than runners with neutral feet. That result is usually presented as "pronation does not matter," which is the wrong reading of it.
What it actually shows is that the shoe category you are assigned tells you very little. Sorting people by foot type at the point of sale, then handing them a shoe and calling the problem solved, was never going to work, because a shoe category is a blunt instrument applied to a foot that is specific to you. It says nothing about whether support helps someone who is symptomatic. Different research points the other way on that question: a British Journal of Sports Medicine meta-analysis of foot orthoses and shock-absorbing insoles found a reduction in lower limb injury risk, which is a stronger and more direct finding than anything the stability-shoe model ever produced.
So the two things are not in tension. Being sorted into a stability shoe is weak evidence that your problem is handled. Supporting the arch itself has evidence behind it. Which is why telling supination and overpronation apart is worth doing for what your foot needs, not for which shelf you shop from.
Where the shoe stops and the insole starts
Here is the part the shoe cannot solve. Between your foot and all that engineered midsole sits a thin sheet of foam called the factory liner or sockliner. On most running shoes it is flat, roughly six millimetres thick, and moulded to a generic shape. It exists so the shoe feels finished when you try it on.
Your arch, meanwhile, is a specific height and a specific shape. If it sits well above that flat liner, there is an air gap under the most load-sensitive part of your foot, and the stability features in the midsole cannot reach across it. The shoe is holding the ground steady. Nothing is holding your arch.
An orthotic insole closes that gap. It replaces the flat liner with a contoured surface that meets the arch where it actually is, and a deep heel cup that keeps the heel pad centred under the heel bone. Different level, different job. If you have never checked which arch height you are working with, the wet footprint test at home takes about five minutes.
With the factory liner taken out, the two levels are easy to see: the medial post works low in the midsole, the orthotic reaches up to the arch.
Seen as a stack, the logic gets simpler. The midsole decides how the platform behaves. The layer touching your foot decides how your arch is loaded. Upgrading one does not upgrade the other, and note that the liner is not in this picture at all, because the orthotic replaces it rather than sitting on top of it.
Your running shoes cover a few hours a week
Here is the part that gets missed in the whole stability-shoe conversation, and it is the reason the question in the title has a bigger answer than yes or no.
You do not overpronate only when you run. The inward roll is how your foot loads, and it happens on every step you take, all day. If you run five hours a week, that is five hours in a shoe engineered to manage it, and roughly a hundred waking hours in shoes that were not. Work shoes, trainers you wear to the shops, whatever is by the door. Flat liners, no medial post, no heel counter worth the name.
Look at the arithmetic from your foot's point of view. Running is where the load per step is highest, which is why symptoms usually show up there first. But it is a small fraction of the total steps. The stability shoe you bought to solve overpronation is covering the most intense part of the problem and almost none of its duration.
That is why a lot of runners get partial relief from stability shoes and cannot work out why the arch still aches on a Tuesday evening after a rest day. The shoe was never absent, but neither was the loading, and one of those two only shows up for the run. An insole is the only piece of the system you can move between shoes, which makes it the only way to close that gap.
None of this means every runner needs support. It means that if your feet are telling you something, addressing it in one pair of shoes is a partial fix by design.
When adding an insole makes sense
Symptoms are the signal to act on, not your foot type. If nothing hurts and nothing has ever hurt, there is no problem to solve and a break-in period to lose. Once your feet are complaining, though, the case is straightforward, and it usually looks like one of these.
You are already in stability shoes and still feeling it
This is the clearest signal. Arch fatigue, heel soreness in the first steps of the morning, aching along the inside of the shin, or a knee that only complains on longer runs. If the shoe was going to solve it, it would have by now.
Your symptoms are one-sided
Shoes come in pairs and are built identically. Bodies are not symmetrical. If one arch drops more than the other, or one shin is the one that always flares, a pair of shoes cannot respond to that. You can put an insole in one shoe and not the other, though most people find running with matched insoles feels better.
Your mileage is climbing
Distance is a multiplier. A small amount of arch collapse repeated 1,500 times per mile becomes a load problem in a way that it never is on a walk to the car. This is also where shin splints tend to surface, because the muscles running along the inside of the shin work harder to slow a foot that keeps rolling in.
You prefer neutral shoes

Is a stability shoe plus an orthotic insole too much support?
This is the question runners actually want answered, and the honest reply is that it depends on how much correction each piece is contributing.
For most people the combination is fine. The shoe steadies the platform, the insole meets the arch, and the two do not fight. What you are watching for is the small minority who end up feeling pushed toward the outside of the foot, usually reported as pressure along the outer edge or a sense that the foot is being levered outward. If that happens, the answer is not to abandon the insole. It is to pair the insole with a neutral shoe and let the insole do the arch work on its own.
There is also a practical limit. A stability shoe already uses up interior volume with its structure, and stacking a full-length insole on top of the factory liner will crowd your foot and cause pressure over the instep. Which brings us to the part people get wrong most often.
Fitting an insole into a running shoe without ruining the fit
Three things decide whether this works.

Check that the shoe has the depth for it. Running shoes are usually generous here, but if your heel feels like it is sitting higher in the shoe or lifting on the uphills, the volume is not there. There is a quick way to test whether your shoes have room for an insole before you commit to a run.
Build up gradually. Do not put a new insole in for a long run. Wear it for a few short, easy runs first and let your feet adapt to the new arch contact. A week or two of shorter sessions is normal. Soreness that grows rather than settles means something needs adjusting.
Recommended insole for running shoes
For running shoes with a removable factory liner, a full-length orthotic gives you arch contact and heel positioning across the whole stride. If the coverage problem above applies to you, it is worth thinking in pairs rather than one: a set that lives in your running shoes and a second set in whatever you wear the rest of the week. Moving one pair back and forth means the shoes you spend the most hours in are the ones without support, which is the wrong way round.

FAQ
Do I still need stability shoes if I use orthotic insoles?
Often not. A contoured insole with a firm arch and a deep heel cup addresses the arch directly, which is the part a stability shoe can only influence indirectly. Many runners find a neutral shoe plus an orthotic insole more comfortable than a stability shoe, because the neutral shoe leaves more room for the insole to work and does not add a second layer of correction. If your current stability shoes feel good, there is no reason to change them, but do not assume you are locked into that category once you have support inside the shoe.
Will an insole make my running shoes too tight?
Not if you remove the factory liner first. The orthotic goes in its place, so you are swapping one layer for another rather than adding one. Running shoes are generally deeper than dress or casual shoes, which makes them among the easier shoes to fit an orthotic into. The signs that the volume is not there are a heel that lifts out of the shoe on climbs, pressure across the top of the foot, or a sense that your toes have lost their room at the front.
How long does it take to get used to an insole for running?
Most runners adapt within one to two weeks. Start with short, easy runs rather than dropping the insole in before a long effort. Mild arch awareness or a slight aching after the first few sessions is normal, because muscles and connective tissue are being loaded in a slightly different pattern. What is not normal is pain that gets worse each run or does not settle after two weeks, which usually means the fit or the arch height needs another look.
If pronation does not predict injury, why bother supporting it at all?
Because prediction across a population and comfort for one person are different questions. Studies show that knowing a runner's foot posture tells you very little about whether that specific runner will get hurt, which is a good reason to stop assigning shoes by foot type. It is not evidence that support does nothing. Separate research on foot orthoses has found a reduction in lower limb injury risk, and clinically, people whose symptoms track with arch collapse tend to notice the difference when the arch is supported. Treat symptoms and comfort as the signal, not your foot type.
Can I use the same insoles in my running shoes and my everyday shoes?
You can move a pair between shoes, but it is worth checking that both shoes have a removable liner and comparable depth. Moving an insole back and forth also means one pair of shoes is always without it, which undermines the point if your symptoms show up during everyday standing and walking too. Most people who run regularly end up keeping a dedicated pair in their running shoes and a second pair in whatever they wear the rest of the day.

Stop thinking of the shoe and the insole as competing answers to the same question. The shoe decides how the ground behaves under you, for the few hours a week you are wearing it. The insole decides how your arch is loaded, in whatever shoe you put it in. That difference is the whole answer. If your feet have never complained, carry on. If they have, buying a better running shoe addresses the loudest hour of your week and leaves the other hundred exactly as they were, and no amount of midsole engineering reaches across the gap between a flat liner and your arch. That gap is the thing to close, and it does not close one pair of shoes at a time.
